Memo #11 Palm Tree Trimming

Palm Tree Trimming

For the past couple of years, there has been controversy over the method used to trim our palm trees. The controversy is the climbing of trees using spikes.

There are many web sites that say this practice should not used but none of them say why not or what damage can happen to the tree.

When I asked the question what damage can occur, the response was “bugs can attack the trees.

If you look at half of our palms, you will see natural weathering leaving large  cracks, holes and crevasses where bugs would find easy access if they wanted, but looking at our 25 year old palms there is no bug infestations.

Upon checking we found that the golf course, City if Laguna Vista and So Padre Island have used this method for years. Port Isabel has their own “Cherry Picker” and uses that.

When this controversy started a couple of years ago, we invited the owner of Murray Palms\Farms, the largest wholesale distributor of palms and oaks in the RGV to take a look at our palms and he gave them a clean bill of health.

Conclusion: We will continue to use the method that has been in use for the past 25 years. IF IT AIN’T BROKE, (You know the rest)
